KAMA AYURVEDA
KAMA AYURVEDA
« In sanskrit, {kama} is desire. {ayurveda} is science of longevity. Kama Ayurveda brings them together. »
Vivek Sahni, Founder and Chairperson
In 2002, Vivek Sahni founded KAMA AYURVEDA with the aim of creating skin and hair care products derived from these traditional formulations, grounded in the holistic philosophy at the heart of Ayurveda.
The story of KAMA AYURVEDA began in Kerala, the birthplace of Ayurveda, when Vivek Sahni rediscovered medicinal recipes from Vedic texts that date back over 5,000 years. Under the guidance of an Ayurvedic guru, Vivek became a beacon of this ancestral wisdom and embarked on a pioneering mission to share these ancient well-being practices and medicinal remedies with the modern world.
SOON MAGAZINE HAS INTERVIEWED VIVEK SAHNI.
INTERVIEW & TEXT : Mário de Castro
SOON magazine : How did you start KAMA AYURVEDA?
Vivek Sahni : I grew up benefiting from Ayurveda without even realizing it. In my household, natural remedies were simply a part of daily life—amla instead of vitamin C tablets, turmeric in our food, coconut oil for cuts, and sandalwood for the skin. At the time, we didn’t call it Ayurveda; it was just how things were done. My real turning point came later, in the early 2000s, when I visited an Ayurvedic hospital in South India. That was the first time I saw Ayurveda practiced as a clinical science, not merely as a spa experience. Patients were being treated for serious conditions using plant-based medicine alongside Western diagnostics like blood tests and X-rays. That completely changed my perspective; I realized that Ayurveda is a codified medical system with real, measurable results.
I didn’t feel equipped to enter medicine directly, but beauty felt like a natural and meaningful extension. In Ayurveda, skin and hair concerns have always been treated as health conditions, not cosmetic issues. That insight led me to create KAMA AYURVEDA, with the belief that if Ayurveda can heal the body, it can absolutely care for skin and hair in a deeper, more effective way.
SOON magazine : Why is AYURVEDA so important nowadays?
Vivek Sahni : I believe Ayurveda is more relevant today than ever because modern life is incredibly inflammatory. What we eat, the stress we endure, and pollution all create imbalances in the body, which often manifest on the skin and hair.
What makes Ayurveda powerful is that it doesn’t just treat symptoms; it looks at the root cause. If you have acne, hair fall, or sensitivity, Ayurveda asks why this imbalance exists in the first place—whether it’s linked to digestion, stress, or internal inflammation—and works to correct it.
At the same time, people today are seeking solutions that are both natural and effective. Ayurveda offers that balance. It’s a science that has been tested over thousands of years, and today we combine that with clinical testing. So you’re not choosing between tradition and science; you’re getting both.
It’s also deeply connected to longevity. For me, it’s not about looking younger, but about helping your skin and hair stay healthy and resilient at every stage of life.
SOON magazine : What kind of ingredients, products, and benefits does KAMA AYURVEDA offer?
Vivek Sahni : At Kama Ayurveda, we work with plant-based ingredients rooted in Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest codified systems of wellness, using formulations that have been time-tested over centuries and reinforced by modern science.
We utilize powerful Ayurvedic ingredients like saffron, which sits at the heart of our Kumkumadi range. Our Kumkumadi Facial Oil is made using 600 saffron flowers in each bottle, making it an incredibly potent formulation. Saffron is naturally rich in vitamins A, B, and C, and in Ayurveda, it is known to improve skin clarity, promote a glowing complexion, boost radiance, and help reduce pigmentation and uneven tone. Within the Kumkumadi formulation, it works in synergy with other botanicals to deliver both an immediate glow and long-term improvements in skin quality.
Another one of our iconic ranges is Bringaras, built around Bringaraj, an ingredient often referred to as the “king of hair” in Ayurveda. This range is designed to address hair fall, thinning, and scalp imbalance at the root—strengthening the hair, improving scalp health, and supporting thicker, healthier, and shinier hair over time.
What matters to me is that we deliver both immediate and long-term results. You can see a visible glow on the skin or feel instant comfort on the scalp, but with consistent use, skin and hair become fundamentally healthier, stronger, and more resilient.
Ultimately, what we offer is a combination of time-tested Ayurvedic wisdom and modern science—products that don’t just treat symptoms but improve the overall health of skin and hair over time.
